A new deep sea coralline sponge from Turks and Caicos Islands: Willardia caicosensis gen. et sp. nov. (Demospongiae: Hadromerida) OMA
Willenz, P.; Pomponi, S.A..
A new coralline sponge, Willardia caicosensis, assigned to the family Timeidae, is described from the deep fore reef off the Turks & Caicos Islands, tropical western Atlantic Ocean, where it is common at depths ranging from 100 to 119 m. Individuals vary up to 15-20 cm in width. The relatively thin aragonitic skeleton is covered with delicate pillars up to + 1 mm. The living tissue is restricted to the spaces between pillars and a thin sheet lying above the calcareous skeleton. Exhalant canals converge upon regularly spaced central oscules on the sponge surface. Siliceous spicules include tylostyles and amphiasters which are secondarily embedded in the aragonitic moiety of the skeleton. In addition, ultrastructural characters of...

Acanthifoliosides, minor steroidal saponins from the Caribbean marine sponge Pandaros acanthifolium OceanDocs
Regalado, E.L.; Jiménez-Romero, C.; Genta-Jouve, G.; Tasdemir, D.; Amade, P.; Nogueiras, C.; Thomas, O.P..
Seven novel steroid glycosides, acanthifoliosides A-F (1-6) and the methyl ester of 6 (7), were isolated from the marine sponge Pandaros acanthifolium as minor components. Acanthifoliosides are characterized by a rare C-15 and C-16 oxidized D ring which was previously found in saponins produced by starfishes. Very uncommon is the presence of additional sugar residues at C-15 or C-16. Their structures were determined on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analyses, including two-dimensional NMR and HRESIMS data. The absolute configurations of the aglycones were assigned by comparison between experimental and TDDFT calculated CD spectra of 1, whereas the absolute configurations of the monosaccharide units were determined by chiral GC analyses of the acid...

Affinities of the family Sollasellidae (Porifera, Demospongiae). I. Morphological evidence Naturalis
Soest, R.W.M. van; Hooper, J.N.A.; Beglinger, E.; Erpenbeck, D..
Comparison of Sollasella digitata Lendenfeld, 1888, up until the present assigned to its own family Sollasellidae Lendenfeld, 1887 in the order Hadromerida, and Raspailopsis cervicornis Burton, 1959, assigned to Raspailiidae Nardo, 1833 in the order Poecilosclerida, leads to the conclusion that both should be considered congeneric and are best assigned to a single genus Sollasella. This conclusion is based on examination of habit and skeletal characters of the type material of S. digitata and both type and freshly collected material of S. cervicornis. The conclusion is strengthened by the discovery of a new species, Sollasella moretonensis n.sp. collected in North Australia (primarily in the northeastern coast, but also an isolated record from the...

Affinities of the family Sollasellidae (Porifera, Demospongiae). II. Molecular evidence Naturalis
Erpenbeck, D.; Hooper, J.N.A.; List-Armitage, S.E.; Degnan, B.M.; Wörheide, G.; Soest, R.W.M. van.
This is the second part of a revision and re-classification of the demosponge family Sollasellidae, and an example of a successful use of combined morphological and molecular data. Sollasella had been a poorly known, long forgotten taxon, placed incertae sedis in the order Hadromerida in the last major revision of the demosponges. It has recently been suggested to belong to Raspailiidae in the order Poecilosclerida due to striking morphological similarities. The present analysis verified this re-classification using molecular markers. Comparing 28S rDNA fragments of Sollasella cervicornis, a newly described species S. moretonensis and a representative set of raspailiid and hadromerid samples. In our analyses Sollasella clearly clusters inside the...

Anti-Biofilm Effect of Biodegradable Coatings Based on Hemibastadin Derivative in Marine Environment ArchiMer
Le Norcy, Tiffany; Niemann, Hendrik; Proksch, Peter; Linossier, Isabelle; Vallee-rehel, Karine; Hellio, Claire; Fay, Fabienne.
Dibromohemibastadin-1 (DBHB) is an already known potent inhibitor of blue mussel phenoloxidase (which is a key enzyme involved in bioadhesion). Within this study, the potentiality of DBHB against microfouling has been investigated. The activity of DBHB was evaluated on key strains of bacteria and microalgae involved in marine biofilm formation and bioassays assessing impact on growth, adhesion and biofilm formation were used. To assess the efficiency of DBHB when included in a matrix, DBHB varnish was prepared and the anti-microfouling activity of coatings was assessed. Both in vitro and in situ immersions were carried out. Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM) was principally used to determine the biovolume and average thickness of biofilms developed...

Antiprotozoal steroidal saponins from the marine sponge Pandaros acanthifolium OceanDocs
Regalado, E.L.; Tasdemir, D.; Kaiser, M.; Cachet, N.; Amade, P.; Thomas, O.P..
The chemical composition of the Caribbean sponge Pandaros acanthifolium was reinvestigated and led to the isolation of 12 new steroidal glycosides, namely, pandarosides E-J (1-6) and their methyl esters (7-12). Their structures were determined on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analyses, including two-dimensional NMR and HRESIMS data. Like the previously isolated pandarosides A-D (13-16), the new compounds 1-12 share an unusual oxidized D-ring and a cis C/D ring junction. The absolute configurations of the aglycones were assigned by interpretation of CD spectra, whereas the absolute configurations of the monosaccharide units were determined by chiral GC analyses of the acid methanolysates. The majority of the metabolites showed in Vitro activity...

Biomimetic Approaches for the Development of New Antifouling Solutions: Study of Incorporation of Macroalgae and Sponge Extracts for the Development of New Environmentally-Friendly Coatings ArchiMer
Sánchez-lozano, Ilse; Hernández-guerrero, Claudia Judith; Muñoz-ochoa, Mauricio; Hellio, Claire.
Biofouling causes major economic losses in the maritime industry. In our site study, the Bay of La Paz (Gulf of California), biofouling on immersed structures is a major problem and is treated mostly with copper-based antifouling paints. Due to the known environmental effect of such treatments, the search for environmentally friendly alternatives in this zone of high biodiversity is a priority to ensure the conservation and protection of species. The aim of this work was to link chemical ecology to marine biotechnology: indeed, the natural defense of macroalgae and sponge was evaluated against biofoulers (biofilm and macrofoulers) from the same geographical zone, and some coatings formulation was done for field assays. Our approach combines in vitro and...

Cold-water coral reefs and adjacent sponge grounds: hotspots of benthic respiration and organic carbon cycling in the deep sea ArchiMer
Cathalot, Cecile; Van Oevelen, Dick; Cox, Tom J.s.; Kutti, Tina; Lavaleye, Marc S. S.; Duineveld, Gca; Meysman, Filip J. R..
Cold-water coral reefs and adjacent sponge grounds are distributed widely in the deep ocean, where only a small fraction of the surface productivity reaches the seafloor as detritus. It remains elusive how these hotspots of biodiversity can thrive in such a food-limited environment, as data on energy flow and organic carbon utilization are critically lacking. Here we report in situ community respiration rates for cold-water coral and sponge ecosystems obtained by the non-invasive aquatic Eddy Correlation technique. Oxygen uptake rates over coral reefs and adjacent sponge grounds in the Træna Coral Field (Norway) were 9–20 times higher than those of the surrounding soft sediments. These high respiration rates indicate strong organic matter consumption, and...

Comunidades de esponjas de los arrecifes del Archipiélago Sabana-Camaguey, Cuba OceanDocs
Alcolado, P.M..
The research was carried out in order to know the sponge community composition and structure of the Archipelago Sabana-Camagüey, and to assay their use as indicators of the environmental severity and predictability, as well as of the most important stressors of this territory. For this purpose, sampling was done at stations located in 10 reef transects (between 10 and 20 m deep). Species which occurred more frequently with numerical dominance are typical of environments submitted to strong sedimentation and turbulence, which suggests that these environmental stressors and light are the main determinants of sponge community structure and composition in the studied reefs. The development of dense algal mats is also determinant in shallow stations. Species...

Diversity and spatial heterogeneity of mangrove associated sponges of Curaçao and Aruba Naturalis
Hunting, E.R.; Soest, R.W.M. van; Geest, H.G. van der; Vos, A.; Debrot, A.O..
Sponges are major epibionts of mangrove roots in the Caribbean. Mangrove sponge communities in the Caribbean mainly consist of species that are typical to this habitat and community compositions often differ from those found on coral reefs nearby. Heterogeneity in species distributions between locations and within locations between roots is often reported. This study quantifies the diversity and abundance of mangrove associated sponges in the inner bays of Curaçao and Aruba and correlates variability of regional sponge diversity with environmental variables measured along the surveyed sites. Tannin concentrations vary between mangrove roots, and were correlated to sponge cover as a possible cause for habitat heterogeneity on a smaller scale. A total of 22...
